At the beginning of the series, Miki gets knocked unconcious (by a ball in the manga -- I believe the anime differs somewhat). When she finally comes to, she is in the health room, her friend Meiko at her side. They talk for a bit, and Meiko of course, is relieved that is friend is better. She offers to retrieve Miki's things before they walk home together.
When Meiko leaves, Miki overhears a conversation between Meiko and Yuu. It turns out that Yuu was a bit concerned and wanted to see her. Since Miki seems fine, Yuu decides to go in. Miki is immediately very tense. She thinks that Yuu is just going to come in and make fun of her. Unfortunately, there's no place to hide, and she can't escape.
So, Miki pretends to be asleep. Yuu comes in, and asks Miki if she's sleeping. He of course gets no answer (^_^). Yuu studies Miki's face for a moment and then gently kisses her. He pulls back, and studies her face again. Then he puts his fingers to his lips, and seems to be deep in thought. And he leaves....
After he's gone, Miki bolts up in bed, claps her hands over her mouth, and turns bright red (it was her first kiss). She's so startled, that the only thing she can say is: "WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT JUST NOW?!"
Miki ends up avoiding dinner that night, but she's forced to face Yuu in the morning. Hey, she's gotta see him some time, they are living in the same house!
Anyway, it's morning before school, and all the parents have left for their jobs. So it's just Miki and Yuu...
Miki of course, is rather nervous, even though she's trying to pretend she doesn't know what happened. When her tost pops up, Yuu tosses it onto her plate (from across the room). Miki asks him to hand her the apricot jam, but they're all out...
So, here's the ORIGINAL meaning...
First of all, Wataru-san was originally going to have all the genders reversed. That is...Miki was a boy, Yuu was a girl...and so on. Some things, like the four parents, didn't change though.
Wataru-san's editor basically said that a female writer writing about a male hero might end up causing the hero to seem unmanly...
So, since it was going to be primarily targeted at girls (it's a shoujo manga), Wataru-san figred that the readers would probably be happier with a female heroine anyway...so it was changed.
Agent Em here, I changed a few words here and there (and cut out a couple). I tried to show it, but sometimes it just doesn't work (heh...).
Not much was changed though, and you can go and check the manga translations to see what I did change if you like...
I was only trying to be a bit more concise, and make it a bit more understandable...'Kay?
Ah well, I tried...(I hope not in vain)
