Genetics
How can ChibiUsa's hair be pink when her parents'
hair colors are black and blond? How is pink hair inherited anyway?
Anime hair colors are a stylistic convention and the characters' hair
colors are almost never really what you see. Her hair is no more pink
than Superman's is blue.
Generally speaking, characters in anime and manga have brown or black hair
(like most Japanese people); the extreme colours are added to make it easier to
tell the difference between characters. Look at Sailor Venus and Sailor Mars –
they look almost the same aside from hair colour (especially in the anime).
There's a scene in
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna
where a few girls are playing
with a ball. The girls look a lot like what you'd expect the inner senshi to look
like in civilian form if they all had black or brown hair.
Is Fiole (from the Sailor Moon R movie) from the
same planet as Earl and Ann?
He looks similar, and is voiced by Earl's original voice actor. It is possible
that they're from the same race, but this is never stated. (They definitely aren't
the same person.)
Ikuhara Kunihiko, the director of the R series and R movie, has explained
in the LD bonus for the R movie that the movie contained shared ideas
with the TV series.
Who was Usagi's father in the Silver Millennium?
Apparently unknown.
Death
Yes. He doesn't come back in any way, shape, or form.
Have the Sailor Soldiers actually killed anyone? Most of the enemies
seem to die by other enemies killing them off, by running into their own
attacks, getting caught in the destruction of their base, etc.
Metallia ("negaforce") is obviously killed at the end of the first series.
It is arguable that they killed Kunzite, although he really died from
his own reflected attack.
Many monsters of the day die, but it's a comics/animation cliché
that if you're artificial, it's not considered killing to get rid of you
even if you are sentient.
In the manga, the Senshi do kill their enemies.
In flashbacks, we're shown that Queen Serenity died immediately
upon using the Silver Crystal to send the Sailor Soldiers et. al to the future. Yet we
are also shown that she split the crystal to seal away the Seven Shadows. How
could these both have happened?
The writers goofed (not a dubbing error). The Seven Shadows plot was added to fill time in the anime.
In the manga, the crystal comes directly out of Sailor Moon's tear, rather
than her tear combining the seven pieces into the crystal.
Gender
Are the Starlights really male or female?
The obvious choice is that they are male and change to female, but there
are two manga references which suggest otherwise (but are ambiguous).
First, Princess Fireball asked the Starlights why they chose "this appearance"
and they responded that it was easier to find women that way. Some have interpreted
it to mean that they chose to be male, although it could also refer to their singing
career.
Second, in manga #16, page 165-166, Tin Nyanko tells Usagi not to trust those
who are female but dress up as guys. Although obviously referring to the Starlights,
she is not really in a position to know much about them.
Is Zoicite
really a male?
Yes. In the anime, he and Kunzite are a couple.
In the manga, his sexual preference is not specified.
For the English dub, the character was given a female voice.
Sexuality
Are Earl and Ann really brother and sister? Wouldn't
that make their relationship incest?
They're children of the Makaiju tree, from which their race came.
In a sense, this means they are brother and sister (and they admit the
tree is their mother), but in another sense, they're no more brother and
sister than Adam and Eve.
Is Sailor Jupiter a lesbian?
The episode which makes people think so is #96 where she seems to have
a crush on Haruka.
While some of the other characters thought it might be a homosexual attraction,
it was not. It's a cultural difference; she really sees Haruka more as a role
model, and wants to be like her, but is not in love with her. The same cultural
difference has made Westerners misinterpret similar situations in other series.
Are Venus and Mars lesbians?
No!
This is based on a misinterpretation of a scene in the manga in the June
1996 Nakayoshi, where they are actually expressing their devotion to the
Princess. Since she doesn't say any words, people reading just the translation
thought they were referring to each other.
Have Usagi and Mamoru had sex together (in the present
day)?
There is a manga scene which many fans see as evidence. (act 18, manga
5), showing them kissing and lying on top of each other. Usagi stays over
at Mamoru's apartment that night, and shows up with the same dress she
had on but with his shirt over top of it.
Keep in mind that ChibiUsa was sleeping in Mamoru's bedroom while they
were in the living room of his apartment.
Jokes
What does "talent" mean (as an Internet joke)?
This refers to a line in the Snow White episode of the dub.
Makoto said that she should be Snow White because she has the largest breasts
(which made Mamoru very nervous). In the dub, it was changed to having the most
"talent". So people on the Net sometimes refer to breast size as "talents".
Identities of Characters
The manga and anime differ on this question.
In the manga, she is the early form of "Sailor Cosmos". There are several stories
about exactly how Cosmos is related to Usagi, one of them being that she is the
Eternal form of Sailor Moon.
In the anime, ChibiChibi is the star seed of Galaxia. Sailor Galaxia
released her star seed into the galaxy after sealing Chaos inside of her
body. The star seed became ChibiChibi. She contains Galaxia's "light of
hope ... [her] glitter of life." As the star seed drifted away, Galaxia
told it: "Go to someone who will wrap you gently, to the one of love and
justice."
The daughter of Usagi and Mamoru, who time-traveled from the future. Read her
profile
for more information.
On Global television (in Canada), they goofed this up in their commercials.
They showed a short-lived, early monster as Beryl, and Beryl as Metallia.
Empress Metallia does exist. The energy Beryl is gathering is for Metallia
to return to the Dark Kingdom in corporeal form. In the dub, she's called
"the great Negaforce."
Who is the Moonlight Knight?
Tuxedo Mask was split into two when revived after the battle with the
Dark Kingdom. The Moonlight Knight held his love for Usagi, and was created
by the Ginzuishou in order to protect Sailor Moon (not by a "part
of him that wanted to protect her" like the dub claims). This also
resulted in his regular self not remembering anything about her for a
while, even after all the Senshi had been reawakened.
Other than one of the minions of the 'Dark Moon,' he is rumoured to be the
son of Zoicite and Malachite. I don't know how that's genetically possible, considering
Zoicite and Malachite are both male. Another rumour suggests that he's Beryl's
son (they've got the same hair...).
If he is the son of any of the Dark Kingdom villains, it would likely mean
that he was sent into the future before their defeat, then sent back by the 'Wise
Man.'
Who are
the Sailor Star Lights?
They are three male singers also known as the Three Lights. They become
female warriors (the Star Lights). They are Seiya (Sailor Star Fighter),
Taiki (Sailor Star Maker), and Yaten (Sailor Star Healer).
Seiya is quite fond of Usagi, but she tells him that they can only be
friends because she has a boyfriend already (and she's not planning on
breaking up with Mamoru any time soon). They do actually go out on at
least one "date," but nothing much happens aside from Seiya
becoming very disturbed by the amount that Usagi can eat.
Who is Sailor V? Does she really exist?
Sailor V is really Sailor Venus, the fifth member of the team.
The Sailor V comics were published first, before Sailor Moon. After the Sailor
Moon comic started, Sailor V was included in it as Sailor Venus.
Unfortunately, DiC messed up the dub. The first Sailor Venus episodes had her
appear, everyone being told she's Sailor V, and Usagi was very happy because she's
a huge Sailor V fan. The dub of those particular episodes took out pretty much
all reference to Sailor V except for the title of at least one episode (Sailor
V Makes the Scene).
Heroes and Villains
Why don't we see a Sailor
Soldier for each planet? And if Pluto isn't a planet, what does that mean for Sailor Pluto?
Mamoru is Prince Endymion of the Earth, and his name in Japanese uses the kanji
for "Earth", so he obviously represents Earth (besides, the moon revolves around
the Earth). You'll probably never see a Senshi for Earth.
Mamoru is claimed to also represent the sun, with Helios (from SuperS)
as his guardian, and his astrological sign (Leo) is ruled by the sun.
Sailor Pluto is the one that ChibiUsa talks to through her Luna ball, and appears
in holographic form near the end of the R season. Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn
first appear during the S season. Sometimes called the Senshi of the outer solar system,
they're not actually part of the main team. In the past, their mission was to
protect the solar system from outside invaders. In the present day, they spend
much of the S season searching for the talismans in order to reveal the Sacred
cup. However, even after finding the talismans and the Sacred cup, and accepting
Sailor Moon/ Princess Serenity as their leader; they rarely fight alongside each
other.
Sailor Mars has pet ravens named Phobos and Deimos (the moons of Mars).
They have been shown in human form in the manga, where they are said to
come from planet Coronis (not a real planet).
The black moon in the Sailor Moon R series is Nemesis, a dark star theorized
as responsible for comets like the one that killed off the dinosaurs.
In the manga corresponding to the Sailor Moon SuperS season, the Amazoness
Quartet become Sailor Soldiers of the four largest asteroids, but not in
the anime.
The Sailor Starlights don't seem to be associated with any particular
heavenly bodies.
Pluto's classification as a dwarf planet has no relevance to the series. There are a number of characters affiliated with heavenly bodies that aren't planets, including Sailor Moon.
Were the four main generals really friends of
Tuxedo Mask once?
This idea is stated in the Sailor Moon "Friends and Foes" children's
book, in English.
The idea really does come from the original manga, though not the anime.
There are also pictures in the manga showing them paired with the four
Senshi. No references to them being engaged or in love from the text have
been found. However, the
Sailor Moon Another Story
RPG played heavily
on the assumption that the Senshi were in love with the generals.
What are the shoe sizes of the Sailor Soldiers?
I have no idea. They are all pretty short, compared to North American women,
so I would expect their shoe sizes would not be very large. As is common with
Asian women, I'd also expect them to have narrow feet (A or B width, I'd guess).
If you want to get really technical, you could take a picture of Sailor Moon
(or one of the other girls), and use that in relation to her height to figure
out her shoe size. Measure from the inner elbow to the wrist (that will be the
exact length of her foot). Then you can convert that measurement to shoe size,
if necessary.
Transformations
Do we ever see the Sailor Soldiers transform back?
In episode 115, Sailor Uranus transforms back normally.
We also see Sailor Moon transform back twice when she loses a previous
transformation before getting powered-up, but these are arguably abnormal
transformations back that might not look like normal ones.
Do we ever see Tuxedo Mask transform?
Yes.
Episodes in which he transforms are: 16, 22, 30, and 62 (English); or
19, 26, 34, and 69 (Japanese).
Communications
Who is ChibiUsa talking to in the future, through her
Luna ball?
Sailor Pluto, whom she calls "Puu".
The dub messes this up the first time by using Luna's voice and pretending
ChibiUsa is talking to the ball instead of using it as a communicator
to talk to another person. They changed the voice fairly soon after.
Who is Luna talking to on the computer in the early episodes?
It's Artemis, Sailor Venus's cat. Luna is rather annoyed when she finds
out.
The dub goofs here. In dubbed episode 39, Luna and Artemis refer to a real
Central Control. The episode was probably scripted by someone who didn't see the
episode where Central Control is found to be Artemis.
Anyway, ignore it. Central Control doesn't exist.
Clothing
Why does Makoto wear a different school uniform?
From a Japanese book
Secrets to Sailor Moon: because there isn't
one of the school's uniforms in her size. This is because she transferred
late in the school year.
In Sailor Stars (anime) she gets a regular high school uniform. And apparently,
in SuperS (manga) she gets the regular Juuban uniform.
How come nobody ever recognizes the Senshi in costume?
There's no real explanation. They may be magically immune to being recognized,
but we're never told that.
In Japanese episode 5, and in dub episode 15, Usagi hides from her brother
when in costume, apparently because she's afraid she'd be recognized. If there
is magic involved, she didn't know it at the time. Dub episode 31 says that they
can't be recognized in their normal identities, though this line may not have
been in the original version.
Asai, in episode 100, recognizes Venus. Fiole in the R movie recognizes
Tuxedo Mask.
This problem doesn't happen in the manga; they seldomly appear in front of
people they know. Usagi and Tuxedo Mask recognize each other almost immediately,
and Motoki recognizes them in costume (volume 3 p.p. 100, 177; volume 4 p. 113).
